Population

The City of Gardena is a small but highly urbanized community located within the South Bay Basin of Los Angeles County, 13 miles from downtown Los Angeles. According to the Census, Gardena’s population in 2000 was 57,746; approximately 12 percent higher than it was in 1990.  The 2009 State Department of Finance Population Estimates indicates the population is approximately 61,810; approximately 4,000 people more than the 2000 Census reported. Gardena’s growth is similar to that of surrounding South Bay communities.

Age

According to  the 2000 Census data, the largest age groups in the City continued to be adults aged 25 to 44 (32 percent) and aged 45 to 64 (21 percent); comprising more than half of all residents in the community. Gardena’s senior population aged 65 and over accounted for 12.5 percent in 2000. This indicates that providing housing options for family households and seniors will continue to be an important need in the community.

Business and Employment

Home to a large labor pool, Gardena can provide employers with qualified and well educated workers.  Nearly 40% of adults age 25 and older have four years of college, a number almost double the statistics of the five-county Southern California region.  Our work force is extemely diverse, including men and women with a wide varietyof job capabilities, from entry level to technical and to supervisory and management.   Our One-Stop Employment and Training Center can assist employers in filling a variety of jobs customized to their specific needs.
