This video explains how one type of environmental restoration of a Brownfield site can work.
In 2004, the City of Gardena, in partnership with residential and business community members, formed the Brownfield Community Relations Committee (BCRC). The BCRC works on the redevelopment and/or reuse of brownfield sites. The Brownfields Public Engagement Process was applauded for exemplifying good local governance in a recent article by the Institute for Local Government.
The EPA defines a brownfield as real property, the expansion, redevelopment or reuse of which may be complicated by the presence or potential presence of a hazardous substance, pollutant, or contaminant. Cleaning up and reinvesting in these properties protects the environment, reduces blight, and takes devlopment pressures off greenspaces and working lands.
